Officer Jamie Walker killed in the Line of Duty

Officer slain by gunfire while making a traffic stop.

On Sept. 28, 2005 at app. 11:30 p.m. Corporal Jamie Walker made a traffic stop on a Blue Ford Aerostar van that had been reported stolen. Upon approaching the vehicle, the driver shot Officer Walker killing him instantly. The driver then drove away. Later the driver was identified as James Elmer Hartley. The van was recovered abandoned on Hwy. 45 south just south of the Waynesboro City limits. At app. 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 29, 2005 James Elmer Hartley was taken into custody without incident at a residence on McIlwain Drive, just about one mile from where the van was discovered.


Hartley was charged with Capitol Murder, Grand Larceny, and Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon. Hartley was brought before Justice Court Judge Jane Hutto for initial appearance where Hartley's bond was denied. Hartley had two prior felony convictions. Hartley is now being held in the Jones County Jail until the case can be presented to the January, 2006 Wayne County Grand Jury.
