Hartley Pleads Guilty to Capital Murder

James Hartley, accused of the September 28, 2005, shooting death of

Waynesboro Police Department officer Jamie Walker, pleaded guilty to capital murder of a law enforcement officer in Wayne County Circuit Court on Monday, August 27, 2007. Hartley was sentenced to life in prison without parole. District Attorney Bilbo Mitchell was informed Hartley wanted to accept the plea. “They just wanted closure to this terrible event in their lives,” Mitchell said in reference to a conversation with the Walker family members. Hartley was arrested after he shot Walker with a shotgun on September 28, 2005. Walker was the first Waynesboro Police officer killed in the line of duty.
